Labor Day has a history that is rooted in the time of industrialization and labor organization. It’s been about 100 years since it became an official holiday, with its first celebration being held on September 5th, 1882. For many Americans, Labor Day marks the end of summer and signals the start of fall. We typically see this as an opportunity to reflect on all we accomplished during our vacation days. Labor Day Facts
- On September 5th, 1882, a parade was held in New York City to celebrate what had been achieved over the course of 8 hours on May 1st, 1886. The march included 10,000 workers, their families and union members who marched from City Hall to Union Square where speeches were given by some of the most famous people at that time including Samuel Gompers and Henry George.
- Labor Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September since 1882.
- Labor Day was created so that working people could have one day to rest and enjoy time off from work together without getting fired.
